Foot Worts: Know How You Get Them to Prevent Them
Simply defined, foot worts are warts that you normally see on the soles of your feet. This condition can be observed in both kids and adults. They appear at least one centimeter in diameter, usually in clusters. However, it is highly possible to have single foot wort appearing on your soles of your feet or toes.
Also referred to as the plantar wart, foot worts may either appear as flat worts or the swollen types. They are generally caused by the virus called the human papillomavirus or HPV. This virus can be transmitted from one person to another through contact. Foot worts are highly contagious diseases and this is why people are advised to exert extra care in preventing it.
Foot wort, also referred to as Douglas worts, can be transmitted when walking on damp surfaces like swimming pools and showers. The HPV virus has the ability to live outside of a host for several months. This is what makes foot worts a very contagious disease indeed.
To prevent being infected with foot worts, proper care and hygiene is necessary. Since the virus is mostly found in moist surfaces, people are highly discouraged from walking barefoot in public swimming areas and showers. Try to be very cautious when using changing rooms, toilets, and pools as well.
As for personal hygiene, never share socks and shoes with other people, especially the ones suffering from the disease. Foot worts don’t have to be visible for a person to be infected. There are many instances wherein a person carrying the HPV virus doesn’t show any symptoms of the disease at all. Even so, it is highly possible for the same virus to be transmitted to you.
Flat worts are more common in kids than in adults. This is because the body tends to build a stronger defense against the HPV virus over time. If you get infected with foot worts, the usual home treatments for skin lesions are normally advised. This disease could come and go without intensive medications. However, for more severe cases of foot worts, it is highly suggested that you go and see a doctor for proper medication.
To fully prevent foot wort, the only solution is to get the vaccine against the HPV virus. This vaccine is newly developed and it allows a person to build a stronger immune system against the virus, preventing all the other types of diseases that it brings in the long run. Aside from flat worts, there are many other kinds of warts and they are caused by the same virus. It was also proven that the HPV virus can cause a deadlier disease, which is cervical cancer.
Foot worts are usually treated by keratolytic chemicals such as salicylic acid and trichloroacetic acid. A dermatologist would be able to prescribe the right dosage and frequency by which these chemicals should be administered into the affected areas. Keratolytic chemicals are used topically and are made to peel away the dead cells on the surface of the skin. These medications, along with the proper caring for the skin, should be able to treat foot worts fully and successfully.
